I would also add the group within the group dynamic as both runners with wives and children were the first to drop. What I lost as a runner I gained as a Dad. Next time (next year?) I would think twice about having the comfort of wife and kids waiting for me at aid stations. I think the prospect of an empty house and a whole lot of time to think about it would keep me on the trail. I also think the lessons learned by all of us involved could be the recipe for success. adam heweyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13666060585687948993noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665266693752255512.post-53231877329619298202012-08-20T20:54:27.822-07:002012-08-20T20:54:27.822-07:00Great writing as always, Ben. Your observation that Victor's success/failure felt as if it were also in some sense your own gets into something deep, I think, about what might be a large part of the compulsion to embark on this type of escapade at all: an experience of immersion (with a team, fellow racers, or the natural environment itself) in which self/other boundaries get blurry.
--Jason TAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665266693752255512.post-72695049736131070292012-08-20T19:11:17.205-07:002012-08-20T19:11:17.205-07:00Excellent stuff, Ben. I definitely saw the same thing as far as the pressure on Victor's shoulders once he was the last man standing ... uh, running. I don't mean he seemed under pressure - far from it, actually; he seemed amazingly strong both mentally and physically from my perspective. I just realized that the situation itself meant he shouldered the burdens of all our hopes. He is made of tough stuff!

A pretty incredible experience all the way around. (Ahem.) Glad you guys made it out and that I got to be a small part of it. Nice work out there!Gretchenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01132576974564001603noreply@blogger.com
